Houston Effective Altruism Website
This website was made for a good human setting up the Houston EA chapter’s website. There is still content being added as it’s made available, but the current design and back-end setup are complete.
Getting the initial site and links up. This will be updated on April 6th.
We offer regular social meetups in the greater Houston area (and virtually), volunteering events, and speaker events in collaboration with student groups at the University of Houston and Rice University.
Houston Effective Altruism
Effective altruism is both a philosophy and a worldwide movement of thousands of people who use evidence and careful reasoning to maximize their positive impact on the world.
Starting Theme
- Frost 0.9.1.0 combined with Frost 1.0.0. I took the core group block styles support from 0.9 and added to the updates from 1.0. (Technically this was coding and not part of the process. The option to turn on core blocks support via Create Block Theme plugin would be awesome.)
- Cloned new theme
- Re-uploaded, made changes, then
overwrote theme - Installed, activated, and setup Akismet, Jetpack, Jetpack CRM, MailPoet, and Accessibility Checker.
Issues Encountered
- On mobile, desktop optimized iCal embed causes issues with sticky header scrolling up. I’m going to use the WP Custom CSS option to make it scale and switch to agenda on mobile.
- On mobile in Admin Themes Add New, the new buttons for themes don’t have correct spacing.
- On mobile in Admin Manage Theme Fonts, the secondary menu is scaled to the right.
- Header and footer template parts not showing on initial upload of cloned theme.
Plugins Used
I’m starting today with sharing more info on each site. For the FSE Program, and to provide starting points for others building WordPress websites and/or themes.
